People are drawn to stories. For Dali Ngcebetsha, that’s where a collection begins. He looks at the music, the models and the concept before the clothes. Each choice needs to make sense within what he’s trying to communicate. When people respond to a piece, he wants them to consider the idea behind it and whether he has carried that idea through. In this conversation, Dali shares how learning about the fashion ecosystem helped him understand where to apply his skills. He also reflects on South Africa’s diversity and cultural exchange, which allow him to create without feeling boxed in. He also reflects on how stories draw people together and the inspiration he found working with Navada Clothing. His SAFW AW27 debut brings those relationships and ideas into a collection of his own. Dali Ngcebetsha A fashion designer, creative strategist and lecturer, Dali previously worked as Senior Creative Strategist at The House of David Tlale. His debut 15-piece collection, Metamorphosis, explores the sacred Xhosa initiation rite of passage and the transition from boyhood to manhood. Created in partnership with Navada Clothing, it moves from casual to formal wear, with details evolving throughout the collection.
