Watch on YouTubeSerious Frivolities: The Life and Legacy of Antony Price
'For me, the only truly marvellous fashion person is the always consistent Antony Price. Nowadays, he is strictly couture but clearly what he will be remembered for is his time as the aesthetic steward of Roxy Music, the most visually literate rock band that ever walked the earth.' - Peter York on Antony Price, The Independent, 2002. The great British designer Antony Price may have been born some decades after the 1925 closure of Lucien Vogel’s La Gazette du Bon Ton but, like Vogel, he certainly knew a thing or two about fashion and glamour; his skin-tight snakeskin tailoring finding its way onto the backs of Bryan Ferry, Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Simon Le Bon within a decade of him graduating from the Royal College of Art. His gowns, too, were as exceptional as they were sensual, seen on the likes of Jerry Hall, Jackie Onassis, Marie Helvin, Annie Lennox and even Queen Camilla, all of whom Price transformed by sculptured curves into beings from a higher plane. His 1970s boutique PLAZA (34 King's Road) was equally revolutionary. ‘It was a fusion of a miniature 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Jetsons, almost as if you could press a button and the clothes would materialise for you’, notes filmmaker John Maybury who is accompanied by Price's close friend and confidante Judith Watt and fashion writer Ben Knight Evans in this special episode of Serious Frivolities that pays tribute to the late and almighty great Antony Price.
